Learning the Editorial Process – Initial Claims

A trip to the bathroom inspired the idea for my next editorial. Sitting in the bathroom were a couple fliers that read “Period Poverty”. The thought of not being able to always access period products haunted my thoughts.

My policy claim is period products should be as accessible as toilet paper. I’m working on brainstorming how to make that stronger.

A factual claim that I have is women who don’t have access to period products are inclined to use unsanitary alternatives. This can lead to vaginal infections and diseases, and can also contribute to poor mental health.

A definitional claim would be that cleanliness is a human right. Everyone should have access to being clean and comfortable as it is a basic need for a healthy life.

A value claim would be that the amount of free period products available is inadequate. I rarely see free or even any period products in public restrooms, yet toilet paper is expected to always be provided.
